ONE TEAM, 3 CLASSES, 3 DRIVERS, ALL PODIUMS.

06.29.2021

ONE TEAM, 3 CLASSES, 3 DRIVERS, ALL PODIUMS.

Tanner: 1st place in Porsche Trophy Class, Astier: 1st in Open Class and Donohue: 3rd in Time Attack 1.

The BBI Autosport team takes podium wins across three classes in what might possibly be a first in the 99 years of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Extreme weather at the top of the mountain forced the officials to shorten the race course to just three of the usual four sectors to ensure safety of competitors but, that did not make racing any easier with constantly changing weather and slippery conditions.

With the Porsche Trophy Class running ahead of the rest of the field, Tanner Foust was the first BBIHC car to go up. The Optima / Yokohama GT4 Clubsport is fitted with capable Yokohama A052 tires which handles the damp conditions well. He was secured a winning run taking 1st place in class with a time of 07:28.269.

The OPTIMA Batteries BBI TurboCup was the 3rd to leave the line within the main run group. Raphael Astier had a slippery 2nd and 3rd sector with limited visibility due to fog, yet was able to secure a 6:36.867 time, taking 1st place in the Open Class and 5th overall.

David Donohue in the AUDRAIN Motorsport GT2 RS Clubsport ran later in the group. Unlike Astier’s conditions, Donohue fought through wet first and second sectors with a clear third. As a result Donohue put down the 2nd Fastest 3rd sector time of all competitors and secured a 3rd place victory in the Time Attack 1 class with a time of 06:45.893. He finished 8th overall.

All cars ran perfectly, the drivers fought the conditions phenomenally and the team is thrilled to walk away with three podium finishes across three classes. What a year!

We thank all the partners, friends and fellow competitors for supporting and cheering us on. We would not have achieved this without your help! As always, thank you to the Pikes Peak Hill Climb organizers for keeping the show going, as it is truly a unique racing experience.

#BBIHC2022 starts now. 100th Pikes Peak here we come!

Final Test Day

06.25.2021

Today is Friday and the final day of testing. The team was up on the mountain doing final validation runs, pushing the cars to have them as ready as possible come race day on the 27th.

The Porsche Trophy Class by Yokohama qualified on Wednesday the 23rd, and Tanner was able to run the fastest time, beating out a previous qualifying record set by Travis Pastrana with a time of 4:21.277 (Pastrana: 4:22.736).

Thursday, the 24th, was qualifying for Time Attack 1 with testing sessions in other sectors and the mountain wasn’t having it. Freezing rain and strong winds broke up the sessions and made for some very slippery conditions. Donohue was able to make a qualifying run with a time of 4:42.816, placing him 5th in class. Such is the nature of the environment at Pikes Peak and a large part of what makes racing there so difficult. Conditions change so the team, drivers and cars must adapt quickly. Various classes qualify on different days and do not always get the same conditions. This is especially challenging for race day, as the run order is determined by qualifying positions - and the weather is constantly changing with every car going up.

While things may look fairly straight forward via media outlets - the team works around the clock reviewing, verifying, adjusting - touching on every critical part in ensuring the race cars are safe and ready for anything.

Have a look at the recent Robb Report article which includes interviews with Tanner Foust and Betim Berisha - talking about Pikes Peak, the team and the charities we are supporting!

This past Wednesday, Porsche Colorado Springs hosted a meet and greet at the dealership with the drivers and their cars. They were kind enough to provide a platform for The Little Warriors Foundation to kick off their fundraising campaign raffling off a Ride-Along with Tanner Foust! Check out the link below for the campaign. They are raising money for cancer research to fight against a children’s’ cancer that is severely understudied and under supported - Ewing’s Sarcoma.

http://drive.littlewarrior.org/bbi

Drive Toward a Cure is running their Fundraising effort towards Parkinsons research and every donation is entered to win a lunch with Tanner Foust! All money raised goes to the University of Colorado Movement Disorders Center – the Rocky Mountain region’s Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence.

Tanner in P1

Tanner Qualifies P1 in the Porsche Trophy Class by Yokohama in the OPTIMA / YOKOHAMA GT4 Clubsport

Wednesday the 23rd of June was Qualifying for the Porsche Trophy Class at Pikes Peak. BBIHC is running the OPTIMA/YOKOHAMA GT4 Clubsport with Tanner Foust behind the wheel. The GT4 Clubsport is a very capable turn-key race car that is easy to run along with great support from Porsche Motorsport North America. The spec tire for the class are the grippy Yokohama A052 tires, great for this course. Tanner set a new qualifying record of 4:21.277, beating out Travis Pastrana’s time from 2018 (04:22.736).

Come race day, the Porsche Trophy Class runs after the Exhibition Division in a slowest to fastest run order. We cant wait to have Tanner go up the hill and put down a serious time!

Qualifying P1 in Open with Astier in the OPTIMA GT3 TurboCup “Lucy”

06.22.2021

Tech, Testing and Qualifying P1 in Open with Astier in the OPTIMA GT3 TurboCup “Lucy”

Race week kicked off just this past Monday the 21st and it has been an extremely dense past several days for the BBIHC 2021 team. The OPTIMA GT3 TurboCup and the AUDRAIN GT2RS CS were buttoned up and shipped off just in time to arrive for testing in Colorado Friday the 19th (special thanks to Tom Ridings for supporting us and keeping our cars moving).

This is when the real BBIHC 2021 work began in prepping for the 99th running of Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The hours are brutal, conditions cover the full spectrum of weather and the work never stops.

Three cars, three classes, three drivers, one team.

Race cars are very much ecosystems of mechanics, physics and driver, all working together in balancing power, grip and speed in the most efficient and effective way possible. With the major updates to the cars, validation and testing is critical for both vehicle engineering and driver confidence. The team worked with JRZ and Suspension Research Innovation engineers to dial in calibrations for the active dampers with great results. The hyper responsive dampers can be very finely tuned to respond to vehicle dynamics as measured by load sensors and accelerometers. We are also running a new wheel and tire package with wider Yokohama slicks on specially made Rotiform wheels. PFC brakes are always there when needed with similar setups run on both cars. M-Engineering and Obsidian Engineering Group were trackside collecting telemetry and making adjustments to the powertrain. Obsidian Engineering has been testing their IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) to aid in traction control and vehicle dynamics using accelerometers and sensor data. Upgraded Garrett Turbochargers providing solid power for Lucy with the charge air-cooled by PWR intercooler core with BBI endtanks. Both cars are running upgrades IPD plenums to minimize restrictions and increase flow. The new aero package developed with Aerosim Research and Verus Engineering is working as needed. The composite body and aero elements manufactured in partnership with Airtech using the new pre-preg carbon fiber from NEXX allow us to package the wider wheels and maximize the front aero and downforce.

Over the weekend the team goes through each car, reviewing and making changes to ensure safety, reliability and improvement during the next test session. BBIHC works out of a special workshop, thanks to our friends at Porsche Colorado Springs, who have been kind enough to be our home away from home and support us in taking on Pikes Peak.

Moday, June 21, was Tech Inspection. It is mandatory that all race cars pass inspection and get the green light to participate at Pikes Peak. The officials review all safety equipment and document the vehicles. Tech marks the start of Race Week for the 99th running of Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. It's always great to see the other participants and their machines ranging from state-of-the-art EV platforms to vintage race cars.

After Tech on Monday the team went back to Pueblo Motorsport Park for some more valuable track time to continue testing, validation and getting that valuable seat time for Raphael and David in their race cars.

Tuesday, June 22 was a test day for the Porsche Trophy Class by Yokohama - so we ran Tanner in the GT4 at the top of the mountain. Steve Wetterau is heading up the BBiHC Tanner effort, working with the driver to get feedback to then apply changes after the test sessions. Tanner is looking to continue to get more seat time and push the GT4 Clubsport platform as much as possible.

Down at the bottom of the mountain it was qualifying for the Open class. Raphael Astier in the OPTIMA GT3 TurboCup put down some good times that landed him a P1 position with a best time of 3:54. Any track time on the mountain is an opportunity to learn and perfect. These were good runs but the team has much more work ahead to keep iterating and improving before race day.

Wednesday is qualifying for the Porsche Trophy Class where Tanner will be fighting for his place in the run order. Other classes will be testing on other sections of the mountain, collecting more data and getting more seat time for Donohue and Astier in their respective machines.

Tanner Shakedown

06.14.2021

Sharing some insight from our initial shakedown of one of our three cars for the upcoming Pikes Peak Hill Climb race.  This past weekend, BBI with support from the Porsche Colorado Springs team set up the Optima / Yokohama GT4 Clubsport for some initial testing on the mountain with Tanner Foust. Special thanks to Tom Ridings (@trlbms) for transporting and hanging with us through morning, noon and night. Mitch from M-Engineering was on site, to support as part of Porsche Motorsport North America, who reached out and presented us with the opportunity in the first place.

After spending three (3) days on the mountain for a total of 20 runs, it was important to get Tanner time behind the wheel of the GT4, get a feel for the road and Yokohama tires. The last time Tanner was on the mountain, it was paved for just two miles with the rest being dirt and gravel. And while he and Betim were dialing in the GT4 chassis, our SoCal team was fiercely at work at BBI getting our other two cars completely prepped.

We’re looking forward to sharing more in the coming days and filling you in on the changes, engineering and the final look. Needless to say, they are impressive machines.

Check out some of the images off the mountain in the media share folder. Credit goes to Porsche Colorado Springs (@PorscheColorado)

BBI AUTOSPORT LEADS TRIPLE-PORSCHE RACE EFFORT AT 2021 PIKES PEAK INTERNATIONAL HILL CLIMB

Famed Drivers Raphael Astier, David Donohue and Tanner Foust Team Up
To Bring BBI’s Heightened Porsche Technology to ‘The Mountain’

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA – May 25, 2021 -- BBI Autosport returns to Pikes Peak for the 99th running of America’s second oldest race, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, June 27, 2021 – known as ‘The Race to the Clouds’ and regarded as one of the most famous and arduous racing events in the Rockies and the world. For this year’s 2021 effort, BBI returns to ‘The Mountain” with three Porsche race cars utilizing BBI’s impressive and updated aerodynamics within three racing classes: Open Class, Time Attack 1 and The Porsche Pikes Peak Trophy class by Yokohama.

“We have learned so much from our own past experiences competing at the PPIHC and to apply those learnings on three diverse Porsche platforms takes it all to a new level” says Betim Berisha, Owner of BBI Autosport.

“Pikes Peak is a part of history that annually brings out the most fearless competitors in the world to race on some of the most grueling environmental conditions imaginable – and in some of the most technologically advanced vehicles to date,” said Berisha. “Our participation not only fulfills our passion for racing, but places us among the very best of the best. Our team and our highly tuned Porsches are testing applications that can later benefit fellow enthusiasts as we apply them to everyday operations, development and advancements for our clients.”

BBI’s Team – 3 Drivers/3 Porsches/3 Classes

“Lucy,” the OPTIMA Batteries Porsche GT3 “TurboCup” which set the TA1 record in 2019 is back again, this time in the Open Class and is once again being piloted by French Rally Car Driver, Raphael Astier. To remain competitive, BBI has improved the OPTIMA “Turbocup” from its 2019 with all-new and larger Garrett Turbochargers and JRZ fully active dampers – among other updates, the vehicle will find quicker speeds in the fast lower section of the course, while better accommodating the bumps on the mountain’s top side.

Champion Racing Driver and former Rolex 24-hour GX Class Winner David Donohue returns for another attempt in “Sunny” the Audrain Motorsport GT2 RS Clubsport after an incomplete run in 2020. Learnings from the 2020 effort have allowed BBI’s team to improve speed and bring more advanced technology to the updated 2021 BBI EVO variant of the GT2 RS Clubsport, through updated aerodynamics, active JRZ dampers and use of a full BBI’s titanium 3D printed exhaust. The Audrain Motorsport GT2 RS once again runs in the highly competitive “Time Attack 1” class.

Professional racing driver and stunt driver Tanner Foust will be piloting the OPTIMA Yokohama Porsche GT4 Clubsport in the Porsche Trophy Class by Yokohama. Based on spec class rulings few updates can be provided on the GT4, however the vehicle does utilize updated JRZ active dampers, allowing Foust, a four-time entrant, to remain competitive. Foust’s experience at Pikes Peak began many years prior, racing before the course was even fully paved. For 2021, BBI has partnered with Porsche Motorsport North America to support Foust.

BBI’s Technical Partners -- bringing forward technological advancements in BBI’s quest for increased performance:

All three cars are supported by Yokohama and are equipped with the ADVAN A005 slicks on the TurboCup and GT2 RS CS and A052 tires on the GT4.

BBI will be the first to demonstrate the new proactive damper technology from Suspension Research Innovations and JRZ, outfitting all three race cars with the new dampers.

Airtech, industry leader in composites manufacturing, is supporting BBI with 3D printed molds for carbon fiber components. Quick turnaround and efficient use of materials makes this a great process for creating unique parts.

NEXX Technologies, an innovator in composite prepreg materials, is supporting BBI with their brand new ENDUREDGE NT-350 carbon fiber prepreg that is designed for superior composite manufacturing without needing any freezer storage or autoclave processing

Aerosim-Research along with Verus Engineering have been key in finding downforce and reducing drag though aerodynamic studies and part development.

The team at Oilstain Lab has been leading the creative on livery development for all three race cars.

RACING FOR GOOD

As the BBI Autosport Team at Pikes Peak makes its mark on ‘The Mountain,’ for 2021 the team will also be gaining additional recognition by raising awareness and funds for two meaningful charitable causes, benefitting local organizations for Ewing’s Sarcoma and Parkinson’s Disease, through BBI’s support for two nationally-recognized foundations: THE LITTLE WARRIOR FOUNDATION and DRIVE TOWARD A CURE.

BBiIis joining The Little Warrior Foundation to help raise awareness, funding and finding cures for childhood cancers, with a specific focus on Ewing’s Sarcoma. The organization funds projects and research that have high potential for saving kids’ lives. Lucy Spada is one of many kids affected by this cancer and BBI is dedicating “Lucy” the OPTIMA GT3 TurboCup and the other two race cars in the lineup to putting a spotlight on the cause. For more information, view: http://www.little-warrior.org

Additional funding will be provided to non-profit Drive Toward a Cure, a 501(c)3 organization that raises funds and awareness for Parkinson’s Disease research AND patient care. Inspired by the camaraderie found within the automotive culture, the Foundation’s mission benefits equally from both enthusiast communities and industry professionals and since 2016 has raised more than a half million dollars including contributions that benefit various Parkinson’s Foundation Centers of Excellence on local, regional, and national levels through Drive Toward a Cure’s “Access to Care” program. 100% of BBI’s contributions to Drive Toward a Cure will benefit the University of Colorado Movement Disorders Center located in Aurora, located on the campus of the largest health center in the Rocky Mountain Region.
